The Bureau of Meteorology's Cape du Couedic wave buoy, South Australia's sole weather monitoring device, has once again fallen victim to technical issues, this time going offline for the third time in just two years. This incident has sparked concerns among professionals who rely on its data, highlighting the potential risks associated with its frequent malfunctions.
The wave buoy, which provides critical information on swell direction, period, and wave height, among other oceanic parameters, has been a lifeline for shellfish divers, fishers, surfers, and oceanographers. However, its reliability has been called into question due to the recent string of failures.
The latest breakdown occurred during a stormy weekend in May, prompting a nine-month repair period. The BOM spokesperson noted that the cause of the failure would be determined once the buoy is recovered, with the timing of the recovery contingent on safe weather conditions.
This is not the first time the buoy has faced technical difficulties. In August 2024, it began transmitting erroneous data, leading to its offline status in September of the same year. The repairs, which involved sourcing a specialist mooring from Canada, took nine months to complete. Unfortunately, the fix only lasted five months before a mooring failure caused the buoy to break free and wash up on Kangaroo Island, resulting in a six-week offline period.
The SA Professional Fishers Association's Ben Barnes, a fifth-generation Spencer Gulf fisher, expressed his concerns about the situation. He noted that most fishers in the industry now use modern technology, such as apps on their phones, to gauge conditions. However, he emphasized that the wave buoy's data is still crucial, and its failure to transmit accurate information can put lives at risk.
Barnes highlighted the potential for people to rely on false information when the buoy is not working, which could lead to dangerous decisions. He stressed the importance of the buoy's accurate data, stating that its failure to function properly poses a significant risk to the fishing industry.
Despite the BOM's assurance that the latest issue is not due to a mooring failure and that the buoy is still in position, the frequent breakdowns have raised questions about the durability and maintenance of such weather monitoring devices. The cost of repairs, which is yet to be determined, underscores the financial burden associated with ensuring the reliability of these critical weather monitoring systems.
