And this is the part most people miss... For those who don't have a Costco membership or prefer not to buy in bulk, there's still good news! Another store, WinCo, which doesn't require a membership or bulk purchases, also emerged as a more budget-friendly alternative than Walmart. These findings align remarkably well with a recent analysis conducted right here by The Oregonian/OregonLive. Our own team compared the prices of 20 common food items across eight major grocery stores in the Portland area. When we crunched the numbers on a per-ounce basis, Costco proved to be the most cost-effective, followed closely by WinCo, with Walmart coming in third.
Consumer Reports' extensive study, published in February, used Walmart as a benchmark. They discovered that Costco was approximately 21% cheaper, and WinCo was about 3% cheaper than Walmart. Our local comparison even showed a more significant difference, with Costco being 31% less expensive and WinCo 7% less expensive.
When approached for comment, a Walmart spokesperson stated that Consumer Reports did not share their data, and they would need the full details to conduct their own analysis, suggesting the report "may be incorrect." They also reiterated Walmart's commitment to "everyday low prices," suggesting that a longer-term price comparison, accounting for sale fluctuations, might paint a different picture.
The Consumer Reports study was conducted by the Strategic Resource Group, a consulting firm specializing in consumer goods and retail. Their price checks weren't limited to just one city but spanned six major metropolitan areas across the U.S., including Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Los Angeles/Southern California, and Virginia Beach. This broad scope gives their findings significant weight.
Unsurprisingly, the study included several grocery chains not found in the Portland area. BJ's Wholesale Club was found to be 21% cheaper than Walmart, while Lidl and Aldi were both over 8% cheaper. H-E-B offered prices that were roughly comparable to Walmart's.
What about the stores you do see in Portland? Consumer Reports found that many popular chains were pricier than Walmart. Target was about 6% more expensive, Safeway around 9% more, and Kroger (which owns Fred Meyer) was nearly 15% more. Even more surprising, Trader Joe's and Albertsons came in at about 25% more expensive, and Whole Foods was a considerable 40% more expensive.
Here's an interesting point of divergence: The Oregonian/OregonLive's comparison showed Trader Joe's prices to be only about 10% higher than Walmart's when looking at a small basket of eight items.
