Emma Raducanu has made headlines by advancing to her first final since her remarkable victory at the 2021 US Open. In a gripping semi-final match at the Transylvania Open held in Cluj, the British No. 1 triumphed over Oleksandra Oliynykova with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. This victory not only marks a significant moment in Raducanu’s career but also gives her an opportunity to claim her first title since that iconic win at Flushing Meadows, where she truly established herself as a formidable competitor on the WTA Tour.
In an exciting turn of events, two British women will compete in separate WTA Tour finals on the same day for the very first time. Katie Boulter has also secured her spot, making it to the final of the Ostrava Open.
As we look forward to Raducanu's upcoming match against Sorana Cirstea, many are curious about her physical and mental state following such a grueling contest. The match against Oliynykova was particularly challenging, lasting nearly three hours and testing Raducanu’s endurance. The Ukrainian player employed some frustratingly effective strategies, including frequent use of moon balls and slices, which left Raducanu physically drained after a tough battle.
"What an incredible match!" Raducanu exclaimed afterward. "I think all credit goes to my opponent today. She played exceptionally well and made it incredibly difficult to get any ball past her. Just when you think you’ve got her beat, the ball is either on your baseline or your sideline—it's really tricky.
"I’m most proud of how I competed, especially my comeback in the third set and my overall match management. Honestly, I don't know if I could have done it without everyone's support."
During the match, Raducanu displayed remarkable determination. After gaining a 5-4 lead in the first set with a break, she faced a tough challenge when Oliynykova broke back. However, Raducanu remained resilient, breaking again in a lengthy game at 5-5 before comfortably serving out the set.
The second set began promisingly for Raducanu, who broke Oliynykova’s serve early on and built a 3-1 lead. Yet, Oliynykova refused to back down and turned the momentum around, winning five consecutive games to even the set. Raducanu found it difficult to counter Oliynykova's unconventional play style.
Despite trailing 2-1 in the decisive third set, Raducanu showed her fighting spirit by taking control of the match, winning an impressive 16 consecutive points to edge closer to victory. Although she faced two match points on Oliynykova’s serve, she ultimately sealed her win when serving for the match herself.
Earlier, Katie Boulter also impressed, defeating American Katie Volynets with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-3 to earn her place in the Ostrava Open final. Currently ranked No. 120 in the world, Boulter made a strong start by breaking serve in the opening game and establishing a 4-1 lead after breaking again in the fifth game. Despite a brief challenge from Volynets, who managed an early break in the second set, Boulter quickly leveled the score at 1-1 and then unleashed her power hitting to dominate the match. With another break in the eighth game, she was able to serve for the match, overcoming an initial 0-40 deficit to maintain her composure and advance to her fifth WTA final.
