Starbucks workers and union members in 10 countries are gearing up for a global protest in support of their US counterparts. The strike, led by Starbucks Workers United, has already seen 3,000 baristas in over 100 US cities stand up for better pay, improved staffing, and a resolution to unfair labor practice claims. The international solidarity action, involving hundreds of workers and union supporters, is a response to stalled negotiations and a bid to increase pressure on the company.
In the UK, rallies organized by the union Unite will take place in London, Norwich, and Glasgow, with workers in Glasgow joining a work stoppage. Demonstrations are also planned at Starbucks stores and offices in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Turkey. On Wednesday, baristas will protest at the largest Starbucks in the world, located in Chicago.
One barista, Diego Franco from Chicago, stated, 'Starbucks executives need to know: wherever Starbucks is, our picket lines will be there too.' The company, however, maintains that its pay and benefits are industry-leading, and that baristas continue to receive more hours of work per week on average.
Starbucks has faced challenges in recent years, including consumer boycotts, a wave of new competitors, and a customer backlash over high prices. The company, under CEO Brian Niccol, has been working to regain customer loyalty with promises of faster service and a return to its coffeehouse roots. They have also outlined plans to invest over $500 million in staffing and training improvements.
Despite some recent sales growth, the company continues to grapple with a long-standing labor dispute that threatens to hinder its recovery efforts. The Starbucks Workers United union, established four years ago, has won elections at over 600 stores, representing approximately 5% of the chain's company-owned US locations. Union leaders report improved relations last year, but contract discussions have stalled since Mr. Niccol took the helm in September, raising concerns about labor rights violations.
