In a striking display of unity, members of the Ottawa Senators have stepped up to publicly condemn the unfounded rumors surrounding their star goaltender, Linus Ullmark, who has been on personal leave since late December. Team captain Brady Tkachuk expressed his frustration candidly during a press conference on Saturday, stating, "It’s very disappointing to see such narratives being circulated. While it’s acceptable for fans to critique our performance on the ice, crossing into personal matters is outright unacceptable. This kind of behavior is nothing short of offensive and shameful, and I am certainly not pleased with it at all."
Tkachuk did not mince words, labeling the speculative stories as "complete nonsense."
His remarks came just hours before a crucial home game against the Florida Panthers, highlighting the significance of the situation within the locker room. Earlier in the week, as speculation began to swirl about Ullmark’s absence, Senators general manager Steve Staios felt compelled to issue a public statement to clarify the matter.
"Linus is away from the team due to personal issues, and he has our full support," Staios stated emphatically. "We ask that everyone respect his need for privacy during this time. It is disappointing that our request was disregarded by those who engage in harmful trolling online. We are appalled that external individuals are trying to create discord within our team. This statement aims to put a stop to the absurd rumors circulating on the internet."
Staios’ defense of Ullmark was well-received by both players and coaching staff. Head coach Travis Green commended the action, saying, "I think what Steve did is commendable."
Forward Tim Stützle added, "I truly appreciate Steve's stance and support for the group. The claims made on social media regarding Linus are completely false. He is well-loved in our locker room."
Another Senators player, David Perron, noted, "When a player takes a personal leave, it’s important to acknowledge that they are dealing with something that requires their attention. Such matters should be treated with respect and dignity, especially when the rumors are entirely unfounded. It’s deeply disappointing that we have to confront this situation."
As for Ullmark’s return, the timeline remains uncertain. Currently, the Senators are relying on goalies Leevi Meriläinen and Hunter Shepard while also having signed James Reimer to a professional tryout with their AHL affiliate in Belleville.
