South Carolina Measles Outbreak: 129 Cases and Counting - What You Need to Know (2026)

The surge of measles cases in South Carolina is alarming and continues to rise, drawing significant public concern. Just last week, the state reported an additional 15 cases linked to an ongoing outbreak in the Upstate region, bringing the total number of cases in this outbreak to 126 and the overall count for the state to 129.

According to a press statement from the South Carolina Department of Public Health, the majority of the new infections—thirteen in total—are connected to known household contacts. In addition, one case originated from a neighborhood interaction, while another remains untraced as investigations are still underway. Currently, the public health authorities have placed 303 individuals under quarantine and 13 are isolated due to their exposure.

As the outbreak unfolds, it has also impacted local schools. The recent cases have led to quarantine measures at 11 different educational institutions, including Campobello Gramling School, where 67 students are now in quarantine, and Boiling Springs Elementary, which has 16 students affected.

Examining the vaccination status of those infected reveals that among the case-patients with available data, an overwhelming 119 were not vaccinated at all, while three received only partial vaccinations. Notably, only one individual who contracted measles had been fully vaccinated, and there remains uncertainty about the vaccination status of three other patients.

The outbreak has notably affected young children, with 24 cases reported in individuals younger than five years old. Furthermore, a substantial portion, 86 out of the 126 case-patients whose data is accessible, fall within the age range of 5 to 17 years, accounting for approximately 68% of reported cases.

This situation raises critical questions about vaccination rates and public health safety. What can be done to increase awareness and prevent further outbreaks? And how do we address the concerns surrounding vaccine hesitancy? We welcome your thoughts and perspectives on these pressing issues in the comments below.
