The Adding Machine: Off-Broadway Revival with Star-Studded Cast (2026)

In an exciting announcement for theater enthusiasts, the Off-Broadway production of Elmer L. Rice's classic play The Adding Machine is set to feature an impressive cast led by renowned talents Daphne Rubin-Vega, Jennifer Tilly, Sarita Choudhury, and Michael Cyril Creighton. This revival, which is a collaboration with The New Group, is directed by Scott Elliott and promises to bring a fresh interpretation to this significant 1923 work.

The excitement builds as previews are scheduled to commence on March 24, culminating in an official opening on April 14. This limited engagement will run until May 10, marking the start of The New Group’s 2026 season at their new venue, The Theater at St. Clement's.

The star-studded cast includes Sarita Choudhury, known for roles in And Just Like That…, Lady in the Water, and The Green Knight; Michael Cyril Creighton from Only Murders in the Building, High Maintenance, and Spotlight; Tony Award-nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega, celebrated for her performances in Rent and Anna in the Tropics; and Oscar-nominee Jennifer Tilly, recognized for her work in Bullets Over Broadway, Don't Dress for Dinner, and The Women.

At the heart of The Adding Machine lies the story of Mr. Zero, a character trapped in the monotony of his existence. He struggles to meet not only his own needs but also those of his wife, Mrs. Zero, and his work colleague, Daisy. A pivotal moment occurs when his employer replaces him with a machine, leading Mr. Zero into a chaotic journey of self-discovery and rebellion against the mechanized world that has overshadowed him.

Adding to the production’s appeal, the design team includes scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Catherine Zuber, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, and sound designer Stan Mathabane, all of whom aim to create an immersive theatrical experience. The production stage manager is Valerie A. Peterson, with Five OHM overseeing production supervision.

Originally unveiled in 1923, The Adding Machine is part of Rice's notable repertoire, which includes works such as On Trial, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Street Scene, and other significant titles like Counsellor-at-Law, We, The People, and Judgment Day. Interestingly, a musical adaptation of The Adding Machine, created by Joshua Schmidt and Jason Loewith, won four Lucille Lortel Awards in 2008, showcasing the play’s lasting impact and relevance.

Looking ahead, The New Group's season will also feature Bocking by Preston Crowder, directed by Stevie Walker-Webb, projected for summer/fall 2026, and Jackals by Adam Rapp, directed by Carolyn Cantor, expected in fall/winter 2026.
