Travis Head's Epic Response to Ashes Question Leaves Press Conference in Stitches
Travis Head, the Australian cricket star, has been a bit of a wild card when it comes to his future as the country's long-term Test opener. But after a stellar performance in the Ashes series, he's now conceding that he's likely to stay at the top of the order. And boy, did he have a hilarious response to a question about it!
Head, who's 32, has been on fire since his unexpected promotion during the series opener in Perth. He's accumulated a whopping 600 runs across five matches, with a strike rate of 87.59, which is his highest individual tally in a Test series. Talk about a hot streak!
On Tuesday, at the SCG, Head cracked a 166-ball 163 in Australia's first innings, his 12th Test hundred. This put the hosts in a super strong position on the third day of the New Year's clash. Head is currently averaging a cool 60.00 as a Test opener, the second-highest in history (with a minimum of 15 innings).
When asked by reporters if he was surprised by his recent success, Head replied, 'Extremely.' He went on to say that he's usually not the one doing the heavy lifting, and that Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith have been the real game-changers.
Head admitted that it's 'likely' he'll open the batting during the winter campaign against Bangladesh, but he's open to changes based on the opposition and conditions. He's all about flexibility and making the best decisions for the team.
Despite having an underwhelming Test record at the SCG in the past, Head now holds the honor of scoring a Test hundred in seven different Australian states and territories, making him the first cricketer to achieve this feat. He's enjoying the challenge of facing a new ball with no catchers and putting pressure back on the bowlers.
When asked about his statistical anomaly and whether he was frustrated about missing a chance to score a double-hundred, Head had a hilarious response. 'Beggars can't be choosers,' he said. 'It's a pretty s*** stat, isn't it?' He prefers scores of 160 to 170 over zero to ten, so he's not complaining!
Throughout his knock, Head was having a great time, chatting with the umpires, walking singles, and even running backwards between the wickets. It's all about enjoying the game and entertaining his teammates, he says.
Head loves playing cricket for Australia and is enjoying the ride. He's all about having fun and taking the piss a bit, as long as it keeps the team motivated. After all, it's just a game of cricket, right?
Australia is looking strong, leading by 134 runs with interim captain Smith (129) and all-rounder Beau Webster (42) unbeaten in the middle. The fifth and final Ashes Test between Australia and England resumes on Wednesday at 10 am AEDT.
