UK Woman Dies of Rabies After Morocco Trip: A Tragic Story (2026)

A UK woman's tragic death from rabies, contracted during a holiday in Morocco, highlights the importance of recognizing the disease's symptoms and seeking prompt medical attention. Yvonne Ford, 59, died in Barnsley Hospital on June 11, 2023, four months after being scratched by a puppy on a beach in Morocco. The inquest revealed that Ford initially dismissed the injury as minor, cleaning it with a wet wipe, and only sought medical help after returning home. Her symptoms, which included extreme anxiety, hallucinations, and dizziness, were initially misdiagnosed as a mental health issue. It wasn't until a psychiatrist, Alexander Burns, was called in that the diagnosis of rabies was made. Burns, who had never encountered the disease before, became concerned about the various neurological symptoms and sought further expertise. Research confirmed that all of Ford's symptoms could be attributed to rabies. Ford was then transferred to the infectious disease unit at Sheffield Royal Hallamshire Hospital, where she passed away a few days later. The inquest heard that rabies has a 100% fatality rate once symptoms appear, but post-exposure vaccinations can be effective if administered promptly. Since Ford's death, her family has raised awareness about the disease's global prevalence. Her daughter, Robyn Thomson, has joined Mission Rabies, a charity dedicated to immunizing dogs in countries like Cambodia and Malawi, in her mother's memory.
