A shocking revelation has come to light, exposing a massive $90 billion oil smuggling operation orchestrated by Russia. The Financial Times' investigation has uncovered a complex web of nearly fifty companies working together to conceal the origin of Russian oil, with profits estimated to be much higher than initially thought.
The story begins with a simple IT mistake. The FT discovered that all 48 entities involved in this scheme shared a single private email server, leading to the unraveling of this intricate network. At the heart of this operation are firms and individuals linked to Rosneft, Russia's top oil producer and a state-controlled entity.
Despite U.S. sanctions imposed on Rosneft in October 2025, effectively cutting off a major market, the Russians persisted and even intensified their smuggling activities. One company, Redwood Global Supply, emerged as the single largest exporter of Russian crude oil since the sanctions, according to the FT's findings.
Redwood Global Supply was sanctioned by the UK in December 2025, along with 13 other entities and individuals supporting the Russian energy sector. However, the full extent of this smuggling operation remains unclear, with analysts suggesting there are always entities willing to sell sanctioned crude cargoes due to the lucrative nature of the oil trading business.
Michelle Wiese Bockmann, a maritime expert at Windward, a marine intelligence company, told the FT, "It's quite obvious that Rosneft and Lukoil are using the same oil marketing networks and tankers to circumvent sanctions and keep oil flowing."
This revelation raises important questions about the effectiveness of sanctions and the resilience of those involved in circumventing them. It also highlights the need for further investigation and international cooperation to address this complex issue.
