Get ready, stargazers! You have one last chance to witness a breathtaking meteor shower as 2025 draws to a close. The Ursid meteor shower, known for its stunning celestial displays, will grace the UK skies, weather permitting, with its peak occurring between December 21st and 22nd.
This year's Ursid meteor shower is active from December 17th to 26th, but the peak is tomorrow, December 22nd, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. Unlike some other meteor showers, the Ursids are a bit more understated, with an average of about ten meteors per hour at their peak. So, if you spot one, consider yourself lucky!
To increase your chances of witnessing this spectacle, head away from city lights. The light pollution in urban areas can significantly diminish the visibility of the meteors. Luckily, the shower coincides with the winter solstice, giving you maximum darkness for viewing. The Moon will also be in a thin waxing crescent phase, setting early in the evening, which means darker skies for you.
The Ursids get their name from the constellation Ursa Minor, where the meteors appear to originate. To get the best view, look about 30 degrees away from Ursa Minor. The prime viewing time is between midnight and dawn. Remember, you don't need to look in any specific direction; a wide-open space is your best bet. Give your eyes at least 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness, and avoid looking at bright lights or screens as you scan the sky.
While the Ursids are generally less intense than the Geminids, there have been rare instances of over 100 meteors per hour! The Ursids originate from the 8P/Tuttle comet, discovered in 1790. This comet's orbit takes it close to the Sun and then out to Saturn's orbit. Its path is tilted to Earth's orbit, leading to the meteor shower. The comet last visited the inner solar system in August 2021, though this isn't directly linked to the shower's activity.
