Vishal Jethwa's Inspiring Journey: From Struggles to 'Homebound' Oscar Shortlist (2026)

Vishal Jethwa, the talented actor from the film 'Homebound,' has recently shared his poignant journey, shedding light on his challenging upbringing. With 'Homebound' being shortlisted for the Oscars in 2026, Vishal has captured attention both in India and internationally. Although the film did not secure a nomination this year, its impact on his career has been significant, especially after a quieter period following his debut in 'Mardaani 2.' For someone from outside the traditional Bollywood circles, 'Homebound' represents a crucial milestone in his relentless pursuit of success.

In a heartfelt conversation with Humans of Bombay, Vishal opened up about the adversities that shaped his childhood experiences. He recounted, "My background is rooted in a lower-middle-class, or rather extremely impoverished family. I view this as a privilege, as it has allowed me to evolve as both an individual and an actor. Observing my parents’ struggles profoundly influenced me. Losing my father at a tender age, I witnessed my mother’s unwavering resilience as she raised us alone, tirelessly working to ensure we had what we needed."

He reflected on financial hardships that marked his upbringing, admitting, "I didn’t enjoy a conventional childhood like many others, yet these experiences have contributed significantly to my growth as an artist."

The journey of 'Homebound' has also made waves by landing in the top fifteen shortlist for the Oscars, underscoring its artistic merit. Vishal reminisced about his educational path, stating, "I attended a Gujarati-medium school and grew up in Malad. After completing sixth grade, we moved to Mira Road, and later, I enrolled at Thakur College in Kandivali. Those were formative years for me. In ninth grade, I began working as a background dancer on the show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs,' where I had the opportunity to perform when stars like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Asin came to promote their movie 'London Dreams.' However, I soon realized that dancing wasn't my true passion."

As he spoke about his mother, Vishal became visibly emotional, sharing, "I have a deep bond with my mother due to her immense sacrifices. Before I discuss my own achievements, I always think of her contributions. Her childhood was fraught with difficulties. In many ways, mine was easier because my parents ensured I never felt the weight of our struggles."

He further described her past challenges, expressing, "She worked as a domestic helper, moving from one household to another, doing cleaning work. When I reflect on her experiences, I find it hard to complain about my own life."

Vishal has previously addressed his family's financial hardships in various interviews. "I come from a very poor family, and I remember my sister reassuring me before I ventured out, saying, ‘Don’t worry too much; you’re the son of a domestic worker.’ She literally cleaned homes, did sweeping and mopping, and sold sanitary products in supermarkets. My father sold coconut water. I’ve seen all of this firsthand."

Looking at his current standing, Vishal remarked, "Today, my life has notably changed, and I sometimes forget to acknowledge the level of privilege I now experience. Many associate privilege solely with positive connotations, believing it only brings advantages. Yet, it’s essential to realize that privilege also carries a heavier burden of responsibility."

As we reflect on Vishal's story, it raises critical questions: How do our backgrounds shape our perceptions of privilege? Can we truly appreciate success without understanding the struggles behind it? Share your thoughts below—do you agree or disagree with Vishal's perspective?
