West Midlands Apprenticeships: Unlocking Opportunities for Young People (2026)

A Call to Action: Unlocking Opportunities for West Midlands Youth

In the West Midlands, a concerning statistic has emerged: the region ranks third in England for the number of young adults aged 16-24 who are NEET (not in employment, education, or training). This issue demands our attention and action.

The government has recognized the need for change and has committed to creating an additional 50,000 apprenticeships nationwide. In its first year, an impressive 353,500 apprenticeships were initiated, offering a glimmer of hope for our youth.

However, here's where it gets intriguing: a survey conducted by In-Comm Training in Walsall, which oversees Dossantos's apprenticeship program, revealed a startling reality. More than half of the 350 young people surveyed, a whopping 54%, had no clue about the apprenticeship schemes available in their own backyard.

Enter Jayne Guest, a recruitment manager and a passionate advocate for vocational training. She believes the issue lies in communication. "We strive to reach as many young minds as possible, but for them to make an informed choice, they must first be informed. That's why we organize taster days in schools; however, if they don't know about these opportunities, how can they choose them?"

Guest emphasizes the need for schools to be proactive in educating students about the diverse paths available to them. "Many young people today crave hands-on learning experiences rather than traditional classroom settings. They want to learn by doing, and it's our duty to ensure they are aware of these options."

And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about creating apprenticeships; it's about ensuring our youth know about these opportunities and are equipped to make informed decisions about their future.

So, let's ignite a conversation. What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you believe better communication and awareness can bridge the gap between our youth and these valuable apprenticeship programs? We'd love to hear your insights and experiences in the comments below!
